Biomethane is considered one of the key drivers of the energy transition: it is renewable, storable, and compatible with the existing gas infrastructure. At the same time, the question remains as to how robust this energy source’s greenhouse gas footprint actually is in practice. A frequent point of criticism is so-called methane leakage—that is, methane that escapes uncontrollably into the atmosphere along the process chain and acts as a greenhouse gas there. In this webinar, we’ll examine the emissions balance of biogas and biomethane plants and explore the technical measures that can effectively reduce methane emissions. Where exactly does methane slip occur, and what methods can be used to measure it? What technical and operational requirements must plants meet to ensure that as little methane as possible escapes? What adjustments are necessary to reduce emissions during processing to near-zero levels?

Around 13.9 million gas-fired heating systems provide heat to around 56 per cent of all homes in Germany. This illustrates that the transformation of the heating market is taking place primarily in the existing housing stock. It is precisely there that biomethane, as a renewable molecule, can establish itself and drive the heating transition within the existing gas infrastructure. It is crucial that all available heating technologies are taken into account whilst ensuring that heating remains affordable for both tenants and landlords . Mission Biomethane: Biomethane in the EU energy mix – best practices and regulatory hurdles

With its RePowerEU action plan, the European Commission clearly highlights the pivotal role of biomethane in the energy mix of the future and sets ambitious targets for the expansion of biomethane production in Europe. In this webinar, we take a look at the current developments in the ramp-up of biomethane production in Europe. In doing so, we will examine how these European targets are being implemented in practice in national markets and where there is still room for improvement in the German market. The focus here is on best practices from France and insights into the market ramp-up in Germany. Together, we will also discuss key regulatory issues, such as the development of the Union Database for mass balance, which is intended to serve as the basis for recording data for the operation of biogas and biomethane plants.
